Why you shouldn’t sell ice to Eskimos – how you should market as a small business owner.

I want to tell you one of the biggest mistakes that small business owners make.

Up until very recently, I made the same error time and time again. I was stuck wondering what I was doing wrong, why could I get no replies from my prospects.

I’m here to save you the trouble I went through and trust me, you will see an improvement in your business when you apply what I’m about to tell you.

Growing up I used to watch The Apprentice religiously. For those unfamiliar people, a businessman would give two groups of entrepreneurs a task. Whoever made the most money would win.

This show seemed to breed the sleaziest business owners ever seen, people who professed their ability to sell sand in the Sahara, Christmas trees in January, and water to a fish. You get the point.

At the end of each challenge, someone in the losing team would be fired.

Without fail, the first two weeks would always see the greasy salesman packing their things and crawling back to where they came from.

It made for great viewing, but for years I wondered why this pattern was repeated?

Put very simply – selling anything to everyone is a terrible idea. Think of an advert or a product that applies to every person in the world. Harder still, try to think of something everyone agrees on.

Impossible right?

It sounds counter-intuitive – but selling to a tiny niche of people is guaranteed to get you better results than trying to sell to the whole planet.

For example, let’s say I have a small business selling a shampoo that grows your hair by 1000%.

I tell everyone I know about my invention. No one buys it.

Which woman wants to walk around with hair down to their ankles? Which man wants to shave twice a day?

Instead, I ask every bald guy I see if they would be interested in having a full head of hair.

Sure, some would say no, but I guarantee I’d make a lot more sales by advertising to the right people.

We specialise in marketing that is laser-focused on reaching the right people, and we will never waste a single penny for our clients by advertising to people who don’t care.
