What is the worst number in business?

Allow me to paint a picture.
You have just started your own business and spend every day trying to land a client.
You send hundreds of emails, call countless businesses and all hope seems lost.
Then one day, you manage to land a “gorilla” client.
Obviously, we don’t mean a business selling primates. Instead, a gorilla client makes up 50% (or more) of your total income.
This seems great!
You can focus all your efforts on one project, you just have to keep one business happy, and when you get paid you’re laughing to the bank.
It all seems too good to be true!
Take it from us - that’s because it usually is.
Let’s go into why this is the worst business mistake.
If you ask any entrepreneur worth their salt what the worst number in business is they will all give you a uniform answer:
One
This can be one skill that you provide, one platform you run adverts on, one social media account, and for the purpose of this blog - one big client.
Let us say your one client suddenly starts to pay your invoices late.
They don’t respond to your emails as fast, they stop sending new work your way and suddenly you find yourself asking:
Am I being cheated on?
If you have to ask this then the answer is usually yes.
Now you have a huge problem.
You’ve lost 50% of your income overnight. Your rent is due, employees are relying on you, and you have the same bills to pay as everyone else.
Even if you survive - you now have to find the money from somewhere. You’re back to square one and scraping the floor trying to find new clients again.
One is without a doubt, the worst number in business.
One advertising platform can be shut down.
One social media account can be locked at any time.
One skill can be replaced by someone who does it cheaper and quicker.
You need someone in your corner who can make you hard to kill. Hard to cancel. Hard to shut down.
The only “one” we are interested is getting your business to #1.
