The number one factor for success

The world has changed a lot in the last 20 years.

1 million people used Facebook, Myspace didn’t even exist, if you wanted to speak to someone you would call them on the phone with a cord.

Fast forward to today and Facebook has 3 billion users, we live most of our lives online and you can message anyone you like from Buenos Aires to Ulaanbaatar.

We’ve lost Blockbuster, Polaroid, Kodak and that’s just naming a few.

Huge business that have been around for decades, gone in just a few years.

What happened? What did they lack?

It comes down to one single factor.

Attention.

Let’s say you make the most incredible, life changing product the world has seen,

If no one knows about it, then it’s like shovelling water out of the sea. Useless.

Don’t believe me? Pick any industry. Airlines, restaurants, taxidermists.

Now search for the industry leader.

I guarantee you there is something that generates more attention than 2nd place.

They might post funny videos, the best-looking photos, they might actively insult their customers (just search Ryanair on TikTok).

If you don’t know what’s really going on, it seems confusing, or even counterproductive.

If you do, it’s a game of numbers.

We can show this with a simple example.

Coffee shop A has 20 visitors each week. They are unremarkable, nothing grabs you about the shop, and about 50% of their visitors buy something.

Coffee shop B has 2,000 visitors each week. They might have launched a brand-new drink made from peanut milk, or they might have a big flashing neon sign outside their shop that protestors want to take down. Even if 5% of their visitors buy something, that’s 100x more customers than coffee shop A.

I’ll repeat that. 100x more customers, simply by playing the numbers game.

You might think the example above is far-fetched. Let’s see if we can convince you with a real-life example.

We did some work for a local butcher. As part of this work, we looked at the biggest butchers in the country.

We saw one standout example based in the Midlands. Did they have better products? Were they the cheapest? Were they easy to get to?

Not one of these things made the slightest bit of difference.

What they did do, was insult vegans, make jokes about butchering the animals, and argue with people in the comments.

The result? Thousands travelled from all around the country to visit this butcher's shop. Just because of a few Facebook videos. Even if 5% of people bought something, they would be in the money.

The more people who look at your Facebook or go to your website, the more money you will make.

It is that simple.

20 years ago, success was based on quality. Now it is attention.

Act accordingly.
