In last week's spooky-themed blog, we told you how to write a killer Call To Action. If you missed it, you can read it here.
Today we’re returning to the very beginning - the headline of your blog.
We can’t overstate how important the headline is.
Put simply - 80% of people will read a headline…
But only 20% will read the article.
You’ve lost 60% of your potential customers in one sentence.
We’re going to tell you exactly how to entice your readers in - and keep them reading.
Step 1: Pick your style
Generally speaking, there are a few standard templates you can use.
Remember - these depend on the blog you’ve written.
For example - if you’ve written a how-to guide, your headline will always start with “how to…”
Or if you’ve got a list of tips and tricks - your headline will read “7 ways to increase…”
This is the easy part. Step 2 is where the magic happens.
Step 2: Sell it!
Most companies lose their reader here. You need to stand out.
How do you do this?
Don’t be boring.
Would you read an article with this headline?
“How to get more customers to your website by using our writing tips”
It sends you to sleep. Let’s improve it.
“How to send a tidal wave of customers crashing to your website, with 3 powerful steps!”
It doesn’t take a genius to see how it’s improved.
You’ve built an image in the reader's mind
You’ve made the solution seem simple
You’ve made it exciting!
You need to pull your customer away from scrolling social media - as long as your headline is more interesting than their Facebook feed then you’re in the money.
Step 3: Be honest
This goes without saying - but if your headlines aren’t believable then your customers will never return.
It stinks of a scam too. Take this example:
“Do this 5 minutes a day and become a millionaire in 30 days!”
It looks like it has come straight out of a spam folder.
Everyone understands that if something is too good to be true, it usually is.
Be genuine with your promises. Take our headline for this article.
500% seems like a wild claim. However, it comes straight from this Wired article, where experts have seen this phenomenon in person.
Step 4: Test, test, and test again.
Finally - the last tip we can give you is to create a batch of headlines that you can use.
If one headline fails - you need more in your arsenal to swap in. Getting the right one can be the difference between 1 viewer and 1,000 viewers.
Especially if you hit Google’s recommended search - which is the holy grail for any blog.
Don’t leave yourself with one layer of protection. The more prepared you are, the more you will succeed.
To wrap up, our 4 top tips for writing the perfect headline are as follows:
Style
Sell
Sincerity
Swap
Implement these tips and watch your blogs skyrocket!
